This module will focus on the Carmelite charism and explore its riches in the light of the scriptures, especially the gospels. It covers such topics as:

  • Praying with the Gospels: ‘In Spirit and Truth’
  • The Heritage of Elijah: Introducing Carmelite Spirituality
  • The Carmelite Rule: A Gospel Approach
  • Rediscovering Saint Joseph: A Gospel Portrait
  •  Mary – Woman of Prayer: A Gospel Exploration

Reading.

The material to be covered will be indicated for each of these themes in the following book, which is essentil reading and a general textbook for this module: James McCaffrey, OCD, The Carmelite Charism: Exploring the Biblical Roots, Dublin: Veritas, 2004. You will also need access to a copy of the Rule of St Albert, which is available on the CIBI website. Each unit will guide you through the required reading from this text . The extensive notes at the end of each chapter will provide ample references to articles, periodicals and books sufficient for further personal reflection and research. in addition to the titles in the bibliography. The module will also require, as a prerequisite, a careful reading of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum (DV), chapters 3-6, #11-26 and some acquaintance with the Carmelite spiritual classics, such as The Book of her Life by Teresa of Avila, The Living Flame of Love by John of the Cross, and Story of a Soul by Thérèse of Lisieux.

This module is divided into 8 units, with 4 questionnaires, spread over the period of the module, and a final examination at the end.
