This course is part of the Distance Learning Website of the Carmelite Institute of Britain and Ireland (CIBI)

This module is intended to introduce you to the life and spirituality of this young, modern Carmelite who died aged 26 in 1906. You will be encouraged throughout the module to read Elizabeth for yourself, to get to know her through her letters and other writings. The module is accompanied, therefore by one book which you will need throughout your time of study:-

Marian T. Murphy OCD (ed.), Always Believe in Love: Selected Spiritual Writings. Elizabeth of the Trinity. New York: New City Press, 2009.

If you wish to undertake some extra reading I would recommend

Conrad de Meester OCD, Your Presence is my Joy: Life and Message of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, Darlington: Carmel, n.d. (available by post from the Carmel, Nunnery Lane, Darlington, DL3 9PN.)

Marian T. Murphy OCD, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Her Life and Spirituality: The Vast Triangled Heart. Gracewing, Leominster, 2011.

Most of the material for this module is gathered from the following collection of essays:-

Jean Clapier, OCD (ed), Elisabeth de la Trinité, l’aventure mystique, Éditions du Carmel, Toulouse, 2006.

In the module you will look at the following areas:-

  • Elizabeth’s life as a young laywoman and Carmelite nun

  • Her reading of Scripture

  • Carmelite vocation in Elizabeth’s thought and experience

  • Influences on her spirituality

  • The Trinity in Elizabeth’s thought and experience

  • Conformity to a crucified Christ in Elizabeth’s thought and experience
