This module is part of the Distance Learning Website of the Carmelite Institute of Britain and Ireland (CIBI)

The aim of this module is two-fold:

1) to introduce you to Br. Lawrence and make it as easy as possible for you to find your way around his thoughts and writings;

2) to enable you to use this knowledge as a spring-board and inspiration in your relationship with the Lord, or for your own spiritual growth.

We shall cover the writings of Br. Lawrence of the Resurrection as found in:

Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, OCD, Writings and Conversations On the Practice of the Presence of God, critical ed. Conrad De Meester, trans. Salvatore Sciurba. Washington, D.C.: ICS Publications, 1994.

All references to the text, page numbers and so on will be to this edition.  This book can be bought by mail order from a number of places including Aylesford Priory Bookshop, telephone: 01622 715770 or Boars Hill book service, or ordered from any good bookshop. This is the only book which is completely necessary for this course. If you use a different edition, you might struggle to follow, as the page references will be different.

You may also find the following booklet helpful:

Jennifer Moorcroft, Practising the Present of God with Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection. London: CTS, 2011.
