This module is part of the Distance Learning Website of the Carmelite Institute of Britain and Ireland (CIBI)

 

This distance learning module is designed to introduce students to some general themes around psychological interpretation, in particular attention will be drawn to the realm of activity that is specific to the psyche and that which is specific to the spirit. Among the topics it will cover are the following:

  • Exploring psyche and spirit;
  • St Teresa of Avila and self-knowledge;
  • God enters through our wounds: St Teresa and the Shadow;
  • Symbols of Transformation in Carmelite Spirituality;
  • John of the Cross and Contemporary Psychological Perspectives.

Recommended Reading

Reading for each unit will be recommended at the beginning of each unit. You will need to read the following:-

Teresa of Avila, The Interior Castle, Fount Classics Series, New York: Harpercollins, 1995 or any other edition. (First & Fifth Mansions).

John of the Cross, The Dark Night of the Soul, trans. Kavanaugh and Rodriguez, Washington: ICS, 1979. ( Prologue; Bk 1 ch. 4 & 9)

The module is divided into 5 units of input and, at the end, you may complete a Questionnaire, write a Learning Journal, or write an Assignment .
