This module is part of the Distance Learning Website of the Carmelite Institute of Britain and Ireland (CIBI)

This module is a brief introduction to the Carmelite school or rather tradition of spirituality. The word spirituality can be seen as open to a myriad of interpretations. As we attempt to delve into the Carmelite tradition we will look at five topics:

  1. An introduction to the Carmelite story,

  2. The Rule,

  3. Carmelites as mendicants – how that affected the tradition,

  4. Symbolic figures – Mary and Elijah,

  5. Living and re-imaging the tradition: Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux, Titus Brandsma, and Edith Stein.
